African Drum Poster

The early editions of The African Drum were markedly different before Jim Bailey took control from founder Bob Crisp. Under editor Anthony Sampson, the magazine transformed from a well-meaning liberal effort into a bold cultural mouthpiece for newly urbanised Black South Africans. As it spread through Anglophone Africa, it captured the unique style and vibrancy that came with independence.
