The American by Bob Gosani September 1954.  A gang of bag-snatchers and pick-pockets paraded the streets 0f Sophiatown over weekends dressed in the loudest and latest American fashion. The leaders of popular fashion, they were called The Americans through the country of origin of their expensive clothing,
