The first editions of the African Drum were distinctly different from the magazine that was to develop once Jim Bailey took over control of the publication from its founder Bob Crisp.  With Anthony Sampson as editor, the magazine shifted from a well-meaning, dry, liberal publication to become the thriving cultural mouthpiece of the newly urbanized black South African and later as it spread through a Anglophone Africa, it recorded in its unique fashion the vibrancy that independence brought to the continent
